About the Vestry

ORIGIN

The term "Vestry" originally referred to the room where the priest of a church would don his vestments. During this time, the laity would meet with the priest to discus the affairs of the church. The word has evolved to refer to the group of lay members, rather than the room in which they met.

PURPOSE
The Vestry of St. Luke’s serves 3 main functions: 1) to care for parish finances, 2) to care for parish buildings and grounds, and 3) to serve as an advisory council to the rector, who is the parish’s chief liturgical and pastoral officer.

MEMBERSHIP
The Vestry is a group of lay members who govern the parish, each of whom is elected to a 3 year term by the congregation at the annual meeting in November.    If you are interested in serving on the Vestry, please contact Father Crowell or a member of the Vestry prior to the annual congregational meeting each November.
The Vestry at St. Luke’s consists of 9 members, including a Junior and Senior Warden. The Senior Warden is elected annually by the Vestry, and serves as the chairperson in the priest‘s absence. The Junior Warden is elected annually by the Vestry and is oversees the care of the parish’s buildings and grounds. Each member of the vestry provides leadership for one or more commissions, listed below.
