st. luke's celebrates 175 years 1844 - 2019HAPPY 175th Birthday, St. Luke’s! It’s not every year you turn 175 years old! But here we are, thanks be to God’s faithful call and provision and with deep gratitude for all the saints who have gone before us, hallowing this place with their prayers and labor, blessing our community with their service. We deliberately pause this year to celebrate and give thanks, as the song says, that “we have come this far by faith.” Festivities are being planning during the first weekend of May, Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th. We hope you can join us. St. Luke’s Historical Society needs your help.
The Society is planning a “trip down memory lane” with display boards of your pictures taken over the years of and at St. Luke’s or at St. Luke’s events at other places. We do not need pictures of the 150th; we have lots of those! We would like to have pictures of baptisms and weddings, the Boy Scout Troop, picnics on the rocks at Fine Creek, youth skiing and other trips, Easter egg hunts, Ram clinic or West Virginia mission trips, pageant pictures, the Santa Claus party, clean-up day, the Fall Festival. The list of possibilities goes on and on. So, please lend us your pictures noting on the back your name, the event and approximate date, and who is identifiable in the pictures. Please deliver them to the St. Luke’s Historical Society box in the office or mail them to Connie Harriss at 1470 Huguenot Trail. The members of the committee are working diligently to help the 175th committee make our celebration a very special time for all of us; thank you for your help. On October 15, 1989, St. Luke's was designated as a historic landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. A bronze plaque situated on the front of the Church commemorates the event. Our 1844 Church building is characterized as having "...symmetry and harmony, but, above all, simplicity." The Church Cemetery has graves dating back to 1846. Many veterans of the War Between the States are buried in the oldest part of the cemetery. St. Luke’s Historical Society meets on 2nd Thursdays at 10 AM in the Parish Hall. Come join us! Become a life-time member of our historical society for $100 and support the work of this committee as they care for our cemetery and historical artifacts. Brochures are available in the church and Parish Hall.
