Food Pantry

St. Luke’s holds a shift at the Powhatan County food pantry on the first Thursday of each month. A shift is a two hour block of volunteer time where anyone interested is welcome to come and help. Volunteers register clients (usually referred by social services) and they shop for fruits and vegetables, prepared food, desserts, and bread. Those products are usually donated from excess by Food Lion and Walmart, and private individuals especially vegetables in the summer and early fall.

Clients also fill out a form with selections of canned and boxed goods (usually donated by organizations) and meats. As volunteers, we sign clients in, gather their selections and help take everything to their vehicles. We spend any free time between clients cleaning, unpacking and shelving deliveries, and assembling USDA bags. The majority of clients receive these bags from the government in addition to the staples, meats and produce. Eligible clients are allowed to visit the pantry once every month.

The pantry is located slightly to the left of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and is operated by the Coalition of Powhatan Churches.
